For youth living in America’s inner cities, nature is hard to come by. Current research indicates that exposure to nature can have numerous physical, emotional and cognitive benefits for young people, including greater attention capacities, reduced stress levels, and improved self-esteem.
In September 2018, Mastermind Connect launched its Camping to Connect Initiative on Governors Island, in the middle of New York Harbor. It was a very unique experience, affording 30 young men the rare opportunity to go overnight camping for the first time, in a place that has been historically closed to the public for overnight visitation. And it was awesome: an experience brimming with fun activities, brotherhood, and impactful mentorship that many cited as a highlight of their entire year.
Now, we want to take our C2C initiative a step further. This fall, we'll begin taking our youth participants upstate and into the wilderness, exposing them to outdoor adventures such as camping, hiking, and canoeing. We'll teach them the skills for surviving in this environment, as well as about outdoor ethics and conservation. Disconnected from technology, they will learn the true meaning of connection: to nature, to each other, and to themselves. This is what C2C is all about.
We’re raising funds for our ongoing initiative, with trips planned for September and October 2019 and Spring 2020.
